ANOTHER BEGINNING - ANOTHER PLACE

Well, as some of you will already know, we decided to up-sticks and move from Christchurch and start again in the North Island ....and we chose Auckland.
Why? - I hear you all ask - South Islanders refer to Aucklanders as Jafas -(as in 'just another friendly Aucklander' - oh yes it is - they have never heard of that other 'f' word north of the Bombay Hills!)

After the demolition of TWH, our hearts were no longer in a city we had come to love over the previous 44 years - we could not see the recovery happening in our lifetime - especially when they announced an expected 85% of the buildings in the inner city area would have to be demolished. The Phoenix that rises in its place will be wonderful - but it will be a young persons' city - the likes of our age group need to see the sunshine sooner and I for one had felt that earthquakes were no longer on my bucket list!

We are fortunate that we can start over again and have chosen the suburb of Devonport in Auckland because we found a wonderful house ( a converted Gospel Hall - circa 1898).

There are other reasons too - Devonport has a wonderful village feel yet is only 15 mins from downtown Auckland by ferry ( free to over 65's ) - which is just a short walk away ( not far from a wonderful boutique wine shop - surprised??)
We can reach the airport in half an hour - great motorways - (we had been wondering where all the Road User Charges had been going over the years) and Len has two major motor racing circuits less than an hour away. All he needs is the car fully assembled and he will never be available to mow the lawn.
Must tell you though - we have downsized (NOT) - when they did the insurance valuation we found that our new home is 20 sq.m larger than TWH - told you I wasn't ready to downsize - even though my collections were depleted somewhat - but I can rise to that challenge too.
However the garden is definitely smaller.. less lawn to mow... I sense a plot here (ok- bad pun!) .

Ultimately - we will build a little Weston House (still love the style) - but for the next couple of years we will wallow in all the extra room and have a life - do lunch - visit friends - and journey between the Islands (North & South) visiting friends and family and giving them respite from the continuing shakes.
Christchurch today was rocked by a further series of nasties - I almost wept for my friends and my other life - this last 15months have been cruel but we are the lucky ones and feel truly blessed by this - we are no more deserving than others.

We have also been overwhelmed by the attention received from all the friends we have made over the years through TWH - you have touched our hearts in the nicest possible way - we love you all - there were very few that were marked as 'not wanted on the rest of life's journey' and anyway they wouldn't read my blog, would they? Only nice people keep up....

We wish you all a very, very happy Christmas and I would write to you all individually (email that is) but my mailing lists were pretty scrambled by the Feb Quake. Even worse ... I have just bought a new computer - I must have been having a senior moment but I decided to change the technology - I bought an iMac.....Well it's like buying a great pair of shoes - these things are so damn stylish.
Our daughter Rebecca considers them the 'creme de la creme' of the computer world and 'intuitive'.
BUT they aren't PC's and they don't do the stuff I want yet and I can't find the 'intuitive' command either or the Spider Solitaire program.Crazy old woman .....me brain is addling.....what is a comfort zone anyway???? So life's a journey.....

I will continue with my Blog ...there is always gossip...even if I have to resort to making some of it up.....

Here's to a Better and Brighter 2012 ...we all deserve it!

THE WESTON HOUSE R.I.P. (1921 - 2011) NINETY GLORIOUS YEARS. OUR PERSONAL JOURNEY.

We are en route to the UK to finish the holiday so rudelyinterrupted last year by a series of earthquakes, which at the time, we hadlittle comprehension as to how far reaching the effects would come to be.

This is our story of how we have been affected ,how we have survived and our hopes for the future.

On that fateful morning on September 4th, we hadjust left Portafino heading to Pisa when the cell phone began ringing - wethought - oh- just Kate and Peter arrived in Italy and wondering if we couldjoin up for a little Vino o'clock. But after 2 message tones we decided weneeded to get petrol anyway...so pulled off the motorway and our whole worldturned upside down.

Our daughter had texted us and I was immediatelyconcerned that something was wrong with our family after all it was only justafter 4am in NZ - so I rang - too concerned to read the texts. I was stunned Christchurch had just suffered a majorearthquake and though they were alright physically they were sheltering in thedoor frame, in total darkness, while they continued to be shaken byaftershocks. Our grandson did not wake initially but he was thrown out of hisbed and Pascal struggled to find him - our newborn granddaughter was beingsheltered in that time honoured way by her loving and protective mother -happily at the breast -no bottle feeding for this family.

Daylight brought shock -and the dreadful sight ofall that nasty liquefaction - now part of our vocabluary - broken roads,bridges and buildings- but no lives lost. That was to come later -in February. But in the meantime parts of Christchurch suffered dreadfully - living withoutelectricity (open fires are a thing of the past in Christchurch- pollution producers) some areas without water and large areas of Christchurch reduced tousing 'port-a-loos' .

The City itself, was relatively unscathed, somebuildimgs down and damage appeared cosmetic - chimneys and the like. But news was scant, and we hadno idea what we were returning home too - we heard all the sensational stuffand no one at home knew what was going on for that first dawn. Day after day they suffered aftershocks andmany of them strong enough to further stress buildings and people. But even though the 'experts' warned us to expectmore we didn't really believe them - we didn't want too - we just wanted torepair and rebuild.

The Weston House had lost all its chimneys andthere was extensive damage to slate and cracks to interior plaster but beingcovered by the 'magic' EQC (Earthquake Commission) insurance scheme instigatedafter the Napier Quake in 1929 we though we were ok. We also believed that allwould be sorted and paid for with efficiency. Well that was dream number one!

We had the plans drawn up - all dutifully done bya heritage architect - and then we waited and we waited and the EQC didn't come- we could carry out emergency weather tight repairs up to a value of $2000 perrepair (inc tax).Somehow by persistence and sheer bloody mindedness I gotthrough and began to collect the names and phone numbers of real people notcall centre operators out of Brisbane. Yes, I know call centre operators arenot deliberately obstructive and initially the infrastructure wasn't there todeal with the huge number of claims froman earthquake on this scale. They have a job to do but everyday since Sept 2010we have had letter after letter to the paper complaining about the stonewall that is the EQC and the frustrationfelt by claimants would have youquestioning their job training - do they have a training module called 'make 'em mad 101' and its companion 'Putting people onhold while playing soothing music - till they hang up'

Luckily,for us, payment came through within 6weeks (damage was over their limit so a full payout was required) but couldwork start? Oh, don't be silly - no, it couldn't . We had the various CCC deptsto deal with - Heritage, Building etcetc etc. This was infuriating - we have a long history of conservation at TWH,we have obeyed all the rules, we have hired the right architects and craftsmen- our work has been acknowledged with awards. Did this count NO - we were putthrough the mill - every which way - I was teetering on losing the plot . Butalthough they share the same buildings these people do not seem to talk to eachother and if they can make life difficult they will - must be a power thing.Well I didn't have time or patience for this - I didn't appreciate beinglectured to about the imortance of the building , we already knew this , afterall it was one of the reasons we lavished so much TLC on it but we had abusiness to run and bookings to honour ( and of course now I can speak my mind- we no longer have an Historic House - the 'powers- that- be' no longer haveany power as far as we are concerned ) but they made our life hell and ate up a large swag of cash in theprocess ...just doing their job - yeah right!

We planned to be back in business by O1 Novemberand we scraped through mainly by making sure that some of the tradesmen wereset finish dates well ahead of this. We generally employ small operators knownto us and they have performed brilliantly for years . But the roofers - wellless said the better - but another battle. They were great when they were asmall firm but the earthquake was an opportunity for expansion and the qualitywent down .

November came and success, we were back up andrunning - our home still bore the scars internally and by now we decided thiscosmetic stuff should wait - the Guest accommodation was back to pristine andthe small plaster cracks on our side of the house could be explained andunderstood. Wine o'clock was back in business - Eggs Benedict were on form andthe banter continued. Once again we shared our wonderful home with a stream ofmagic people from all over the world. We had our usual couple of days off atChristmas but in the early hours of 26th December that started to come unstuckwith some nasty little blighters - shuddering, loud and close by. We were hitwith a cluster of quakes within the City area.

I coped with the first 5 or 6 .... we had learntnot to be afraid... we were in fact quite laid-back by now. But at 10.30am wewere hit within a minute by a 4.9 at AMI stadium (about 3km away - earthquakesare by direct route , don't follow the road and don't stop at the lights!) andone around 4.3 on the other side of Hagley Park. That scared theliving 'bejesus' out of me - you see I was standing at the top of the stairs -looking down - and I watched our home twist as we were caught like the meat ina sandwich –TWH tried to tear itself apart . The house filled with mortar andchimney dust (including soot- ugh) and all the work we had completed inside wasundone and then some. Large cracks appeared - some quite disturbing - I couldno longer sleep upstairs and found I could not actually spend any large periodof time up there. Large heavy nightstore heaters toppled - this was seriousstuff.

We closed the B and B (hoping to re-open in timefor the RWC 2011) - called in the architect again plus a seismological engineerand planned extensive repair and strengthening work - we still had faith in therepair process. I inwardly groaned at the bureaucrapsy that would follow - morepetty battles - more ego massaging - more frustration. We were ready but theywere not - we would have to move out - horror of horrors - while roofing wasremoved, floorboards lifted around the entire perimeter and strengtheningcommenced.

I suppose in a way the fact that decisions were,as usual, grinding exceedingly slowly saved zillions because on Feb 22 we werehit by the biggy - the record breaker - the soul destroyer.

As you know by now, Len and I were in the house -we both threw ourselves under tables - assumed the position - 'the turtle' - Iprefer to call it fetal bordering on faecal. As Len dived under the table so manyof you have eaten at - it was hit and damaged by a huge piece of plaster thatfell of the ceiling - right where he was eating his lunch - he could have beenkilled.I threw myself under the desk in the office - hauled my office chairtowards me - as the contents of the dresser in the office hurtled towards me.Of course I was terrified - but I didn't have time to think I could be killedand my life , even the interesting parts, did not flash before my eyes. Iremained completely continent - which was a great relief. I was on the phone toBrian from Tomahawk (IT/Marketing people from heaven -small Ad break) - heheard the horrific noise, he heard the breaking of china, he heard me scream -then the phone died and poor soul he thought I had been killed. Yes, it wasthat bad - the media reports were horrifying in their descriptions but theyunder estimated the damage and the resulting trauma of the residents.....pluscommunications were out. Some time later Brian was relieved to hear we were ok... it must have been horrible for him - not that I would have been such a lossto humanity - but it was a very nasty ear-witness account for anyone toexperience.

When the shaking stopped ( and be aware here thatit was 4 times stronger than that quake in Japan 3 weeks later, due to thetrampoline effect of the location and surrounding ) all was deafeningly quietand still ( but not for long within 10mins we had another biggy). By then Lenand I were flying around like demented idiots rescuing treasures that had notbeen smashed - the story of which appeared in a previous blog. We were in'leaping buildings in a single bound' mode - and believe you me with furniturehaving fallen and smashed it wasn't easy. The large Linen Press upstairs hadfallen over and I crawled through the gap to rescue my jewellery for which bothI and the Insurance Company are extremely grateful. We had a huge hole in thefront of the house reaching from upstairs to down - we lifted and pulled myGranny's chaise-longue to safety away from the weather and the hole to berescued later. We filled both cars with paintings, silver etc and yes, as youknow, wine, knickers & perfume and retreated to The George car park to tryand contact people. Pascal had called in to see us on his way home - the familywere ok - the relief unimaginable.

The crowds streamed homewards or to shelter in Hagley Parkin silence. It was all very strange and it was later that we realized many ofthese people had seen things that no one should witness in their lives - thesescenes would be permanently etched on their brain and that suffering would takea long ime to fade- if ever.

(At the moment the plane is flying over Asia - it is turbulent and it's shaking about a lot - ifI wasn't typing - I would be drinking or spilling it - this writing is verycathartic)

We arrived at the home of our dear friends Brian(different Brian) and Dale around 4.30pm- via Papanui - and other than a bit of liquifaction and a couple of badlydamaged buildings all seemed serene. Oh yes, they had been badly shaken too butthe ground is shingle not peaty river sand of the Eastern Suburbs.

That night the damage was shown on TV and we werestunned - our Iconic Christchurch buildings were gone or too badly damaged torepair - 250 to 300 people were missing - our beloved City was in ruins. Allwithin 30 seconds of intense shaking.

The Eastern seaside suburbs had damage beyoundbelief - roads, bridges , the estuary had sunk - the suburb of Bexley was kneedeep in liquifaction and the cliff edges of Sumner and Redcliffs had crumbledtaking many beautiful houses with them. Fabulous Fendalton homes were in ruinsand destined for demoliton.

To date they estimate 10,000 homes will have togo..... That's the lives of at least 20,000 to 30,000 people in ruins. The scaleof repair is huge and the cost astronomical - one of the highest claims in theworld to date.Why? Because of the high numbers of home ownership in NZ and theavailability of Earthquake Insurance ( bet that disappears - certainly has forunreinforced masonary structures). Some land is so badly damaged the Governmentis buying it from the owners so that they can rebuild elsewhere .

Our own home was mortally wounded.

But that was only the beginning of the end...whatwas to follow in the next 5 months - stretched our resolve to the very limit.

First - we were behinds the army/police cordonwith 24 hrs - so inaccessible.Then we were "red-stickered' - too dangerousto enter.But they were on the front doors so we went round the back! Withfleeting visits, hard hats, letting people know where we were , acting on theadvice of our engineer we made fleeting adrenaline fueled raids to rescue ourpossessions.Our actions were not condoned by our family at all and I apologizeto them for that - but Andrew snowboards in the French Alps in extremeconditions and Rebecca has travelled to frightening 3rd world countries overmany years - so they got to share our stress - I am treading on thin ice heremethinks...best left alone. Afterall maturity is optional or preventable whenone is over 60!

After 13 June , when we had the double whammy ofthe 5.8 followed an hour later by a 6.3 - that was it for us - what was left inthe house would stay in the house .

Yet we still fought on - Council and HistoricPlaces Trust - both determined it could be fixed - CERA ( the ultimate andunchallengable power - like martial law - that powerful) caved in and listed usfor demolition on 20 June. Our south east wall had blown out and my clothingwas either on view to all or at the bottom of a pile of bricks below. I wasstanding looking one day when a woman suggested that if we had a fishing rod wecould 'score' that nice jacket - she meant no harm and I apologized for myresponse! Another day I was floored by the remark of a boy about 8 or 9 yearsold who asked me a question then said it must have been a very beautiful house.I could have hugged him but had to turn away to hide my tears.

But then the house was broken into on at least 2occasions - electrical and computer equipment was strewn around theproperty..must have been done at night and things were stacked for removal andthen they must have been disturbed ...

The worst and darkest day was yet to come - andthat was not the day of demolition - it was the days before - when the salvagepeople moved in. I didn't want them in the house - it was too risky by thatstage - and I didn't want any deaths or injuries on my conscience. I thoughtthey would take the obvious salvage like doors , windows, fireplaces...beyoundmy control and subcontracted byDemolition company - I suppose it is implied permission , disguised in smallprint in a contract signed with the insurance company.

But they stripped our house - I was numb -everything left went. Is this the way of the world?

Is this ok? Was I given a choice...well after aconfrontation about my presence (they didn't know who I was - but very soondid!) I asked for a pair of shoes in a distinctive box....answer straight outof Catherine Tate - "Shoes , dear? No, dear - they went two hours ago ".

They offered to let me into my own house - but Icouldn't go in - it wasn't safe and I knew that seeing what was left would be myfinal impression - leave me to my dreams I said and walked away - heart broken.Some things were returned after huge protest - photos and a very small part ofmy Mother's Spode dinnerset - minus thedinner plates and luncheon plates! Thedoors we had specifically requested turned up the day before we left for theUK - thanks to the intervention of theinsurance company and the demolition firm ( in no doubt due in some small partto my constant bitching - did I say that???? You bet I did - Maxine and Me -we rock!)

Two days later the house was demolished.

Where our future is we have no idea..... but Iwill let you know - we have firm friendships with so many of you - how could wenot - anyway we may visit you for a drink and a natter someday. I can't see usoperating a Bed and Breakfast again - how could you top TWH?

Since Sept 1010 we have been shaken , stirred andscarred but our story is one of many shared experiences with our fellowCantabrians . None of us have gotten off scot-free many have suffered painbeyond description but we are all grateful for you concern and support.

Our homes and our city may be gone but our memoriesare intact . Len and I were priviledged to have owned, lived in and loved one of NZ's most beautiful homes -wewere blessed. We were able to share this with many wonderful guests - we weredoubley blessed. Our Christchurch family havesurvived and our son Andrew, in France,was not here - we were tripley blessed.We have a lot to be grateful for.

My heart goes out to Pedro from Pedro’sRestaurant who lost his home in September then his restaurant in February and his beloved only son on thesame day – our loss pales into insignificance in comparison. He is one of manywho’s losses are too dreadful to contemplate.

We are all a very small speck of dust in thegeological history of the world....and here we are off to riot torn London onboard a plane that has just spilt my wine...I must have words with the Pilot!

THE END OF AN ERA

It is with deep regret that we have to announce that The Weston House is to be demolished.

The earthquakes and aftershocks ( all 7,000 of them ) may have taken our home and business plus 25% of our possessions but they haven't taken our spirits - well not quite.
Like everyone in Christchurch we have existed in a war zone especially since February when we suffered the earthquake from hell.

The Weston House was cordoned off for weeks and under Army guard and Police control. As you know our location borders the "Red Zone" or CBD 'no-go' area.The heart of the City is in an awful state with whole areas set for demolition and is not the City we loved any more.

It WILL rise again but at the present it is hard to visualize - we are all too tired to think that far ahead.I think that the double hit last Monday shook us to the core. We are being hit from every direction with quakes along previously unknown faults - no doubt setting each other off. But every time this happens we get a new series of aftershocks and the time frame for the earth settling down stretches out to another year. It sure tests your faith....

But I would hate you to think we are the only ones suffering - there are thousands worse off than ourselves.Those in the low lying eastern suburbs have been hit again by foul liquefaction while those on the spectacular sea facing cliffs of Sumner and Redcliffs have watched their homes plunge or left balanced on the very edge. Earthquake damage shows no respect for any sector of society and strikes where the land is weakest.

Hundreds of volunteers have turned out to help clear up the mess but the affected still have no news or decisions regarding their futures.
We have had our own battles - the demolition, which we have fought for since February - was scheduled to start today - but although classed as urgent - they are minus a piece of paper and now could be delayed upto 2 weeks.
TWH has been terminal since 22 February ,which inflicted terrible wounds on an already damaged building.
We were lucky to escape with our lives and any suggestion that repair was an option filled us with horror.
The three 'who's have ruled our lives and fuelled our battle
- who will pay?
- who would insure us?
- who would stay here anymore?
I feel like Mrs Schwarzenegger .... I have fallen out of love with my home - it has been unfaithful to me and will soon lie broken at my feet...
But no matter how lovely your home is your family is lovelier and the fact that we have all survived is all that matters.
I cannot express adequately how grateful I am to them all , especially Len, who has to deal with my cranky spells (can you imagine me getting cranky? I hope so!!!! I have a black belt in it now - along with my black belt in shopping)

Earthquakes can't take away the joy TWH has delivered and the wonderful friends we have made over the last 15 years.
That was the dream - this is the nightmare.

Our future....a holiday - completing the holiday we started last year... some sleep....and then we will rethink and plan.
Len needs some time off to race his car and I need some time off to smell the roses as they say and we both need to spoil our grandchildren.....

THE RED ZONE - STILL BARRED TO ALL RESIDENTS UNLESS YOU HAVE CELEB STATUS

As citizens of Christchurch this area is still out of bounds to us although surrounding streets are opening up to traffic and the sights we are seeing are shocking us to the core.

I think the one thing we cannot comprehend is how lucky we all were to survive baring in mind the shaking was stronger than that felt in the Japanese Quake in March ...see a previous blog for a link to that report.

On Wednesday night TV ONE are screening a documentary on '5 days in The Red Zone' - you should be able to view this through their website 'on demand'.

Otherwise life continues...I will update on a more personal note later this week - we are all well and happy ...maybe happyish is more accurate...but trying to be positive about our future and that of our favourite city.

Went to a great Birthday dinner on Saturday night at Tiffany's - made all the better by the fact that the world didn't end as predicted. Bloody man - how dare he rattle our nerves like that - plus he predicted it was all going to start in Godzone NZ - probably doesn't even know where we are !

The Weston House is looking very sad but we are not allowed in currently, as our area is part of the cordoned off part of the city.The bureaucraps are dithering and we are no further ahead than we were on 22 Feb.
We are staying with wonderful patient friends and will house sit for them when they head to the UK after Easter.
We have been deluged with invitations from all over the world to come and stay - in fact we may never move back home (just kidding)...but look for us in a town near you....and keep a couple of bottles of NZ Sav Blanc in your fridge just in case we arrive on you doorstep...drink and replace regularly as this is not a wine for cellaring .....now this way you are prepared for us and stocked with good wine for yourselves - a 'win-win' in every way.

You know you live in Christchurch when....

· The rest of the country offers you a place to stay

· “Munted” and “buggered” are official technical terms

· You go 'pfffff' when Wellington has a 4.5 earthquake that's 40km deep

· You see a nice park in another city and think it would make a good evacuation point

· You sleep in one suburb, shower in another and collect water from yet another

· When you drive on the right side of the road and no one thinks it's wrong

· You are happy two Policemen came for a visit

· When your bike becomes your best friend

· You think it's fine for a soldier to be stationed at the end of your street

· Your en-suite has a vege garden, dog kennel and grass

· Your teenagers are only too happy to sleep in the same room as their parents

· You stop using the term “built like a brick sh*t house”

· Dressing up to "head into town" means putting on a hi-viz vest, hard hat and boots

· Discussing toilet habits with total strangers is an everyday norm

EARTHQUAKE - 22 FEBRUARY 2011

Hi,
we are both safe and well and our family and lovely grandchildren are safe and well...
Our lovely home and it's contents... well at this stage I can't say except the whole area is cordoned off due to the imminent danger posed by a neighbouring highrise apartment block which could fall at anytime.The Weston House has suffered extensive damage.
We managed to save a few treasures and I grabbed some wine as I ran past....hardly any clothes-no shoes but a few clean pairs of knickers....and a bottle of Chanel no5 that was on the floor!
We cannot go back into the house and were nearly arrested when we 'stole' Lens's T56 Formula Junior racing car from the undamaged garage!
The destruction in the heart of the city is horrendous and those poor families who have lost loved ones are the worst hit.
I never thought I would say this but I fear I have just converted to minimalism.

MAY 2011 BE A YEAR OF HOPE AND FULFILLMENT FOR ALL

Ah...always type in a safe format to start - Windows Notepad...if only the rest of our lives were so predictable.....

I had hoped to send this Christmas email before Christmas - as you do ...then I revised that on the theory that everyone is too busy prior to Christmas with shopping , card writing (many thanks for all of those too) and in the case of our Northern Hemisphere guests - snow shovelling - so I decided that post Boxing Day would be good and just in time for New Year. After all you would be relaxed , having a bit of time out - especially well deserved after all those Boxing Day sales (even on the net! - v.stressful).......but it didn't happen and over a month later I would like to put in a few good wishes for a Peaceful New Year and a Happy Easter. We live in hope for us all - it has not been a good start - with weather extremes disrupting thousands of lives worldwide and peace failing to break out in those most vulnerable of places
- it saddens the heart and we have 11 months to go.

We had a great Kiwi Christmas Day - at the beach with our family. Okains Bay on Banks Penninsula - stunning day - hot and fun - no fuss, just a BBQ, salads and fresh mussels picked off the rocks, cooked in white wine, fresh herbs and garlic butter - served with Pascal's homebaked bread.Even played Rugby with a soccer ball - can you imagine that being fun???? Bet you can after all your dreadful snow and the tragic floods in Australia.

Our good wishes for Health and Happiness for you all for 2011 and beyond and this time we are including our beloved home and on a lesser note ourselves.

As you know in September 2010, Christchurch suffered a 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake and from our website and our blog
you will have learned that we returned a month early from our holiday in Europe to repair and restore the damage - which in hindsite was not too bad - although it seemed bad then.
Everything went according to plan and most was repaired for re-opening on 1st November (except for the chimneys - but that is a whole bureaucratic nightmare and worthy of a 'black-comedy' blog of its own - which we will laugh about later I'm sure!
And so it happened - we had a great November /December businesswise and generally feeling pretty over it (earthquakewise I mean).We had had aftershocks ( they don't warn you about these) about 4,000 + of them - mostly not noticed to be honest as they were quite small and could have been the feeling of a truck or bus passing.We had a few 5.0M - which are definitely noticeable and damaging but not too frightening - lots of 3.0's and 4.0 +'s - but we were coping, a bit anxious but being quite positive- as our guests duing that period would tell you....

But by now you are realising I am leading up to something....yes - Boxing Day...just as the sales started we were hit by a series of aftershocks in the centre of the city. I was quite calm (relatively) for the first four of them - more whoops, that was close (we have had so many we can almost pinpoint the epicenter and magnitude )- when at 10.30 am we were simultaneously hit by two very shallow quakes less than 2Km away coming from different directions leaving The Weston House somewhat like the meat in the sandwich!

Calm and reason disappeared (well from me - Len was brilliant) Fortunately we had no guests at the time but from where I stood it looked as if the house was trying to tear itself apart. I can tell you now there is a difference between terror and fear - can't quite quantify it - but I wasn't in fear for my life ( may not have had time for that, of course) but truly put in my place as regards my part in the scheme of things and the sheer power of Mother Nature ( I'm sure that should be a neutral 'Person' Nature these PC days - can't really see why such forces should be feminized - Hurricanes can be blokes too now, you know!)

Damage ...oh yes ... 4th September was a pussycat by comparison.Breakages once again very few - that is the weird part and once again fortunately no injuries even though shopping was in full swing.

Result - we are out of action for the Summer Season - and will scrape in just in time for the Rugby World Cup - I am currently scouting around for a manufacturer of designer armour, steel boots and whips of varying sizes - might have to get a designer muzzel for Len - I bark - he bites ( like - here comes the heavy cavalry ! ).

You wouldn't believe what they are planning...and in fact we don't know the full extent ourselves - but we have suffered structurally this time and
although we have no walls down - so to all intents and purposes we look ok - from the outside - stuff has happened that has the Architect and Engineer going - oh dear...this is no longer cosmetic and involves quite intensive remediation.

I will give you updates.... I am sure writing the blog will be like freebie counselling... if I can manage a giggle I may survive.

I am suffering from Guest Withdrawal - a new disease - and missing the social side and breakfast chat immensely.
We are still having Wine O'Clock - purely medicinal you realize - but we do toast you all and have caught up with quite a few repeat/returning guests for dinner whose bookings we have had to cancel. I'm sure you will be pleased to hear I have had no side effects whatsoever regarding lack of cleaning , cooking or laundry but am being diligent in the garden.The sunsets are still beautiful....

We have had the chance for a bit of a summer social life with friends which is great and we are having adventures with the
Grandchildren - Jola at 5 months is a bit too young to appreciate it - but we are having such fun with Calix - Ice Creams just before dinner and healthy treats like chocolate muffins.We are going to see Fire Engines and Trains and Boats and Trams - kicking the ball in the park and playing on the swings - pure magic - they don't care if Grandad's hair falls out or Granny has double chins - we are collectively know as Grannygrandad (one word ) and greeted with huge hugs and kisses.Today Len and Calix caught the Orbiter Bus around the suburbs - hopping on and off for treats . Just before Christmas we had horse-drawn trams on the new inner city tram route - another adventure that included lunch at the Bangalore Polo Club for Len and Calix. When we went back a week ago this young attractive waitress came up and asked Len where the 'darling little boy' was...as our son would say ' a chick-magnet ' !

I just smiled - well grimaced actually - haven't noticed the reverse with the good looking young blokes and me!!!!! But I am getting over it...

Not having guests is hitting our Trip Advisor ranking too - so if you enjoyed staying at The Weston House - we can do with a few kind words (just click on the Trip Advisor logo thingy below to write a review ) Even though Trip Advisor can be abused it is a valuable tool for the travelling public - I use it all the time but if you fallout of the top 5 you are lost.... we are currently at No.3....

...TIME FOR AN UPDATE

Well it is nearly 2 months since that fateful morning in September...and how are we doing?

Probably better than expected and there wouldn't be a person in Christchurch and the surrounding areas without an experience to share.

Our hearts go out to those who have really suffered property-wise - although we have the EQC (Earthquake Commission) which is a Government body controlling an insurance scheme for this sort of event - they only insure each property (residential only) for $100,000 + gst.The balance of the insurance must be paid for by the owner to bring it upto replacement value.Not everyone has done this and many couldn't afford to ... this is heartbreaking for those concerned.There is a fund to assist but Kiwis are proud and unwilling to ask for handouts.The commission is thorough but slow and one has to become the 'squeaky hinge in need of oil' plus have a list of phone numbers where you can reach real people other than relying on the help line!

To those visiting the City of Christchurch - little has changed.A few buildings are missing and there are a few cracks to be seen but the infrastructure appears to be pretty smooth and organized. Living here is a different matter - an earthquake or national disaster is a breeding ground for bureaucracy and departments that don't communicate... but I will not go there - I would hate to see our own path through the maze slowed by any indiscretion of mine!

We are progressing ...but slowly.The guest accommodation is back to normal.The slate roof repairs are hampered by a lack of slate suitable for The Weston House, which because of its Historic Places Trust and Council Heritage listings (as high as they get for a residential building) has to match existing slate - so it has to be Welsh ... not Chinese or sparkly Spanish ( yes, there is 'sparkly' Spanish slate!.)

This wonderful house has stood staunchly through it all.

Even the aftershakes (2,400 to date) are slowing ...we are all experts now and pretty good at judging the size and whereabouts.Some are a bit nerve-wracking - especially the 5's - nothing extra has broken (which is good) - the odd extra plaster crack has appeared (which is annoying). There have been media reports of people running screaming from shopping malls - which is true - but this is group panic and quite infectious - and these people have been through a lot and are stressed. Extra damage has occurred in some places but nothing compared to the
main event of 7.1 .

The media , as always , are only interested in bad news....and boy, are we aware of that - being stuck in Europe those first days after the quake - we relied on the Internet for news and it was all bad.I really believed that we would be returning to a war zone - flattened city, troops on the streets , no water or sewage , no electricity . Reports about The Weston House were bad ...but when we arrived - expecting the worst - I was amazed at how little damage we had sustained. Chimneys were all down and subsequently a lot of broken slate - but few breakages , some interior plaster damage but structurally we were A1.We were truly lucky and blessed.

So we are pretty much on target ...but the chimneys won't reappear for at least 6 months... looking identical but 70% lighter and strengthened to a very high rating.

Everyone is well, the grandchildren are gorgeous, the roses are early and the weather is fine.
...and gosh, I nearly forgot...the 2010 Sav.Blanc is the best yet...how could I forget that?...
Oh and something else... remember in our Guest Info I said that having sold my 1951 MGTD I was going to buy a Mini Cooper S? Well I have....and it's 100% pure magic ...and it's all black like my favourite Rugby Team.

Let's drink a toast to growing old disgracefully...... in the company of good friends and family....

RE- OPEN THE END OF OCTOBER

Initial reports , from a competitor no less- no names mentioned , were of Peterborough Street covered in our bricks – but they were from the chimneys which aren’t structural but are very prone to earthquake damage.

A lot of roofing slate is damaged but we are getting priority from our slater in return for prompt payment for previous work.

Did I panic ....hell, yes! Len kept saying don't waste a good panic...but that wasn't going to work...He got very deep and meaningful regarding his racing car though... unscathed - just dusty.

And where exactly were we when we heard , one of ‘those’ moments , we were sipping wine in Portofino ,

Italy

. Not particularly good (the wine) and far too expensive (everything) - gorgeous place though.

Having established that our family were safe- including our new granddaughter Jola (and they are far more important than anything else)

.......our thoughts immediately turned to our beloved home.

Of course, we cut short our holiday by a month, as you do…and were amazed that after such a huge trauma very little damage was sustained by either the building or the contents!

There is no structural damage whatsoever.

No, I am not about to become a minimalist and repairs are mostly minor but will be irritatingly fiddly and time consuming …in fact it would take less than 2 days to make the small repairs necessary in the guest suites.I hate cleaning up after tradesmen - although our plumber is a gem - even offered to make me coffee once!!! I was so stunned I said 'no thankyou' ...but then I figured he had worked that out for himself!

I had previously ascertained that wine,perfume and shoes were all ok - the wine wasn't really a problem as we had depleted most of it before we left for the

and Europe!

We envisage being open again for business by the beginning of November ….why so long?…well, we insist on the best of tradesmen- after all our Historic Places Trust Category 1 Listing means that a very high standard, having been attained must be maintained – the Travel Tradeand our discerning guests throughout the world expect no less from The Weston House and we will be working very hard to keep our reputation intact.

I am so grateful that we are all okay and even more grateful we weren't here on the day.. but would I leave Christchurch ...not likely.

I would rather have shakes than snakes...and today was beautiful and sunny and in spite of all the Media hype the damage to the city is not too bad.We have not been flattened ...a few buildings are missing but we still have plenty left....and the locals have become even nicer...

PS ...have you any idea what comes down the chimney when you have an earthquake?

Well it isn't Father Christmas -that's for sure!! ...and to think I cleaned before we went on holiday!

WHITIANGA TO ROTORUA VIA THE COROMANDEL PENINSULA

Well only a few more entries for this trip and then we are back in Christchurch.
I find that my enthusiasm for NZ has grown and our desire to spend more spare time (what's that?) travelling within the islands is at the very top of our 'bucket' list.Amazing how many miles we have to travel before we discover our own backyard.
The Coromandel Peninsula has the most amazing view around every corner ...and believe me there are many of them.The road is good and stopping points plentiful - thank God for digital photography - Kodak must have made a fortune out of this area.
It is quite a drive but we managed it in one day and that included exploration stops and photo stops around 300k and upto 5 hours driving.

We left Whitianga mid morning and arrived in Rotorua late afternoon - having meandered through farmland and towns servicing every sector of our agricultural economy.
Around Cambridge (which is a gem of a town - gorgeous autumn colour), we are in horse breeding country - doubt there are many poor farmers here.Bloodstock sales here are legendary and success of the animals in every aspect of horse sport has been well covered - google can match my information with millions of hits so I will leave it to them.

The drive between Cambridge and Rotorua is leisurely and by this stage you may be getting bored by superlatives and beauty but it is all true.This coupled with the fact that the population is sparse makes the country a joy to travel through - even at the height of the tourist season.
But one little surprise on the journey into Rotorua is Fitzgerald Glade - out of the blue you journey through this small glade of lush greenery sweeping down to the road - do not blink or you will miss it - but all my life and many trips to Rotorua I have been stunned by this gem of nature - I'm sure you will too.
No .... I am not going to include a photo - it is best experienced first hand.
And so on to Rotorua - the heart and soul of NZ's thermal wonderland ...where the earth bubbles up to meet the sky.Once again I will leave the numerous websites to 'sell' the destination - I can add nothing - a visit here is a unique experience and it is worth a day or two to explore the delight....we were there for 3 days ...mainly at a conference ...but it was great to catch up with the people and the city ...Len is very familiar with it as he completed his High School years there...so some questions may go unanswered!
Where did we stay in Rotorua - well at the Regent of Rotorua - more motel than hotel but newly refurbished, good facilities and wifi.
Our accommodation of choice though would have been Nicara Lodge Lakeside Lodge , a little way from the center of town and on the shores of Lake Rotorua. I am familiar with this fabulous B&B - the founder member of 5 Star Accommodation - a marketing group of Qualmark 5 star properties throughout NZ. We also consider Heather and Mike to be friends as well as collegues and the service they offer would make Rotorua so much more than a destination - staying at Nicara would make the destination shine.

FROM HAWKE'S BAY TO THE COROMANDEL VIA THE MIDDLE(OF THE ISLAND...)

Well, I remember it as a lovely day when we started but as we headed over the Taraweras - not truely mountainous like the Southern Alps but a good road through very scenic country - we glimpsed the sights through rain , fog and sunshine.Somehow the weather did not detract from the rugged beauty and added to the experience.The Napier-Taupo Highway (SH 5) is part of the themed 'Thermal Explorer Highway' from the NewZealand.com site ( much quoted as is the Best resource for NZ trip planning and I link frequently to specific areas mentioned in our trip.)We also travel along parts of this route as we continue our trip to Rotorua ( next bit )

The other interesting area on this highway to Taupo is the Kaingaroa Forest -
the largest man- made forest in the southern hemisphere.

Taupo itself is a great place to stay and the lake is the result of one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in the world - pick up some pumice (for free ) from the lakeshore to rub out those rough spots on your feet - that pumice may have landed there 26,500 years ago!
We lunched at the Replete Food Company - great food and even better prices - well recommended by us at least and great for a bite on route.
After lunch we departed north - destination Whitianga - through some of the nicest farmland in the country - through the prosperous country towns Tokaroa , Putaruru, Matamata, Te Aroha. Every type of farming abounds here - timber, sheep and dairy. It is also a great horse breeding area around the Cambridge - Matamata areas. The annual yearling sales are major earners for the breeders and NZ as a whole.Just a generic Google search under 'Cambridge Yearling Sales ' will give you an indication of the depth of quality in the thoroughbred bloodstock industry here.
We arrived in Whitianga late afternoon - the roads on the Coromandel are challenging but safe and the road into Whitianga would be wonderful on the world hillclimb circuit - if all the traffic was one-way and there were no speed cameras.But that is pure fantasy, so a sedate trip ensued to take in the equally spectacular views and thus we arrived at Villa Toscana .
The owners Giorgio and Margherita are amazing and have transported a slice of their wonderful country to the most magic location in the world - all exaggeration justified.
We stayed 3 nights - it should have been forever.This is a 'chill out' destination- great food area and , if you fancy some deep sea fishing then Giorgio is your man - he also is Mamma Mia Game Fishing and Scenic Charters - so you just have to enjoy yourself - you can't help it!

Not to be forgotten while visiting Whitianga was a visit to the home and business of New Zealand Encounters - a fabulous boutique NZ travel company - totally unique - totally committed to service and your wishes. No standard plan for this firm - each of their itineraries is designed for you, the customer- totally tailored. I love small, owner operated travel companies - they are user friendly from the point of view of both the customer and the provider. Satisfied clients produce happy guests and memorable journeys . Win - win - win situation.

Well that is all for now - my catch-up blogs are progressing - you ask for more and that surprises me - but it is not hard to enthuse about NZ as a destination - as I have said before - all this and no snakes.
All we could wish for is a win in the Rugby World Cup next year and paradise will be complete!

WAIRARAPA TO HASTINGS (MORE WINE COUNTRY)

You may be surprised to hear that there are a few regions left in NZ that don't grow grapes and make wine.I suspect that these regions actually brew great beer.But regardless we drink both and on a hot day spent gardening there is nothing quite like an ice cold beer - Gardener's Champagne - you can tell I'm partial....
The Hawke's Bay Region is famous for some of our finest reds Merlots, Cab Savs, Syrah to name a few.The Gimlett Gravels region of Hawke's Bay has more accolades for its reds (plus Reisling,Chardonnay and Sav. Blanc) than you could count on a rainy afternoon. Gisborne, further north on the same coast , is one of the largest wine growing regions in the country, with over half of its grapes going into the production of Chardonnay - yes, there are still people that drink it and a fine drop it is too.
But we didn't go to Gisborne this trip - we meandered north to our destination of Hastings and Havelock North through quaint towns called Eketahuna and Pahiatua.Past the wind farms on the foothills of the Tararua and Ruahine mountain ranges just west of Woodville.An amazing site this is the location of the biggest wind farm in NZ started back in the 1990's and continuing to expand.Onward to Dannevirke through more beautiful country to Hastings and our destination - Endsleigh Cottages in Havelock North.

But if you want a little detour before you get to Hastings - head to the small town of Porangahau ( south east of Waipukarau and can be seen on the map below ) and visit the hill called "Tetaumatawhakatangihangakoauaotamateaurehaeaturipukapiki-
maungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu" all up 92 letters, and has been entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest officially recognized place name in an English-speaking country.What does it mean? I just knew you would ask ‘The hilltop where Tamatea, with big knees, conqueror of mountains, eater of land, traveller over land and sea, played his koauau (flute) to his beloved . I thought it was obvious - the ultimate conversation stopper - spell it, say it and explain it!

Back now to Endsleigh Cottages - three ( two original and one replica - I bet you can't tell! ) wonderful properties all close to each other. Set in rolling country is on the edge of Havelock North (which is minutes from Hastings) . I can't say enough about the dedication and energy of this Hastings couple, Margie and Denis Hardy , in the restoration and building of these wonderful early style colonial cottages.They are furnished beautifully in the style of their era and equipped with everything you could possibly require.I could have moved in and stayed for ever - it was so relaxing and comfortable.
The gardens are great too - check their website - you will not be disappointed - the reality outshines the description.

Of course I couldn't possibly leave this blog without mentioning Napier - our very own Art Deco Capital.
This all came about because the town was virtually obliterated by an earthquake in 1931 and the subsequent rebuilding has given us some architectural gems.Their Annual Festival has officianados of Art Deco traveling there from the world over - all in period costume and driving classic cars of the era.
All these wonderful places are easily reached in short drives from Endsleigh Cottages - so treat yourself to a short break you deserve it.

WE CONQUERED THE RIMUTAKAS AND DIDN'T GET BLOWN AWAY- THEN WE EXPLORED THE WAIRARAPA - YOU SHOULD TOO!

This region is the darling of the Wellington weekenders and a great wine growing region Martinborough.

The distances aren't great but the area is well worth exploring - to say it is vibrant would be to undersell its charms. Like Marlborough in the South Island this is a foodies' paradise and there are two properties worth staying at here . One is Briarwood in Greytown - if I say WOW again - would you think I was overdoing
it ? Well not actually - wow is an all-encompassing word that inadequately describes NZ - its scenery and its charms. Briarwood is a self-contained property in a lovingly restored NZ Heritage Building and I have a soft spot for history - it abounds in this region. Liz Kennedy is a very talented lady and it shows in the interior of this Gem.
North of Carterton , in a wee place called Gladstone, is a fabulous new property Summit Lodge , a purpose built retreat with charming owners Jim & Tracey.
I haven't stayed there yet but I know they must be good as they are Members of 5 star and Heritage Inns and you have to be good to be invited to join these groups.
We would have liked to spend more time in this region - it is very picturesque - and a great region for R and R - especially when you are on a whistlestop tour of NZ .You now know you should have factored in more time for you visit here but don't worry, you can do what so many of the guests of The Weston House do ( that's our B and B by the way - just in case you had forgotten) and come back to NZ again and again.

The next blog will have us heading north again - this time to Hawke's Bay - oh dear more wine and food.

If you wish to take the scenic route ..then you cross the Cook Strait by Ferry.( see previous posts on South Island Tour).If time is an issue then you fly but you miss so much - the cruise up the Sounds is worth millions in WOW factor - all untouched and unspoiled and differing little from the days of our forebears arrival in these fair isles.
Wellington, our capital city, ofter referred to as 'windy Wellington' - because when it blows it can be so strong they put rope barriers up at the corners of intersections so the pedestrians don't get blown away.I kid you not - forget hairstyles and buy bulk hair lacquer.It's what life in the 'roaring forties' is all about and makes Kiwis great in sail boats!
But take Wellington on a calm and sunny day and it is a stunner.Lovely hills, quaint suburbs,gorgeous homes and around every corner a little cafe serving coffee to die for and scrumptious food.Worth researching before you go and for accommodation you can't beat Mt Victoria a magic little Band B in the centre of Wellington.Bill and Coral Aitchison will treat you like royalty and give you a carpark - and this is pure gold in the city centre.
We have stayed in hotels too in Wellington ...but they are very generic...loo always just inside the door, two conditioners and no shampoo ....and pay for everything! The add- ons cost as much as the accommodation - at least with a B and B the price is all inclusive and no nasty surprises!
There is a huge amount to do in Wellington and well worth setting aside a couple of days to explore its delights.The 'Absolutely Positively Wellington' website says it all with the true humility indicated by its name- no shrinking violets here - it's where the politicians practice their black arts - just kidding - their mothers still love them!

A little north of Wellington - try the Villa Margarita - a Member of both 5 Star Accommodation Group and Heritage and Character Inns of NZ.This is a stunner of a modern, purpose built property - brilliant hosting ( a requirement to belonging to these marketing groups). Mark and Margarita will make you feel so at home you may never want to leave.
A little further north ( about an hour from Wellington ) is Te Horo Lodge we have sampled the wonderful hospitality of Craig Garner.The location is wonderful and there is a great little restaurant a short distance away The Red House Cafe . Craig is an accomplished cook and a wealth of advice to his guests.
...and so we traveled north over the Rimutakas ... an interesting drive and amazing road.....

CHRISTMAS AT LAST- GREETINGS TO ALL

Well I would have to say that 2009 goes down as the year that got away on us.
Great plans etc - but are you like me this year - just how come there seemed to be fewer days - or am I getting older and forgetting most of them? Both of the latter methinks, but we are both fit and well and waking up in the morning - so that is always a bonus.
Because of the economic woes of the last 12 months I haven't had time to think of Global warming. In fact Global warming seemed pretty promising in August with gorgeous weather and an early spring- but then the climate changed as it does, and seems to have been lacking in promise since - until last week that is, when everything has been back to normal.Well summer has arrived and what a fabulous day yesterday was - can you imagine Christmas in the sun? It really is to be recommended - cold beer , a barbecue , bare feet, parks and beaches. Still we have some of the northern hemisphere tradition though- fake snow on the wreath on the door and Santa and his sleigh from the North Pole! It causes a lot of laughter for our guests from that part of the world.

This is the first real Christmas for our lovely grandson Calix - at nearly two - he has realized that Christmas means presents - not just his - he will open them all. Although he was a bit disappointed with his present from his French Nanna - he thought cadeau was actually gateau - and is still searching for the cake!

It has been a slower season than usual so we decided to do a little maintenance during December - see the earlier Blog - it would have been better to take the time off and relax.
We have only just finished the kitchen floor - well I use that word 'finished' loosely - it looks almost finished - except 'the expert' used a new roller sleeve on the third final coat and while we no longer have runs and ridges we now have fluff - not a lot - but enough to need re-doing.... again- but not by 'that' expert - if you catch my drift!!!
This last coat was applied Christmas Eve - so today I am making my Christmas cake.
Of course this explains why I am also late with my Christmas News and next week I may just get ahead of myself and do the Christmas cards for 2010 - because they aren't on the horizon at all for 2009!
The City Mission however, was grateful for the donation and the gift of food. Plus the Carbon Credits I have gained for not wasting trees or air miles have saved the planet for another year.
As Kiwis we hope we take our environment seriously but we realize we can enjoy saving the planet if we think laterally.We need to plant lots of grape vines to gobble up the CO2, then we need to drink all the wine to save the jobs of the workers and the investment bankers.This is true sustainability!
We need to travel long haul only and not fly short distances ,walk or cycle when we can, eat locally grown food.
We need to live like we used to when we were younger and the world was a simpler place and the choices were limited. We ate seasonal produce from local farmers and we holidayed at home.
Our lives have changed so much, hard to imagine life without Google or texting - we have even converted to using GPS instead of maps!
I can , however imagine life without tamper proof packaging and plastic bags!I can do without a four wheel drive vehicle, out of season flowers and produce.
All our guests now receive a gift of a string bag so they can say 'no' to plastic - so I feel we are making a tiny but achievable difference. All skepticism aside - when Qualmark took on Sustainability as part of our assessment procedure - like others, I groaned - grumpy old women don't like being told what to do. But then I discovered I was saving money as well as the planet and the 'feel-good' factor kicked in - so I will do what I can.We now have Silver status - which we are happy with - Gold means more paper work ( doing it isn't enough - you must have a paper(or record) trail) - and that means bureaucracy 'rules' - and I don't hold with that at all - me being a grumpy old woman!
We also holidayed at home this year - no virtue or sacrifice I might add - but we thought it was time we revisited our own country. It was magic - and more road trips are on the cards. I have completed the South Island Journeys ( see archived blogs ) and these may be of help to your family or friends who may be coming to NZ.We took your advice and included some of the places you have stumbled upon as well. With GPS you can't really get lost - just as long as you have the destination added - so you can explore and travel the roads less visited.
Our North Island Journey was also fascinating and here we took some of the routes recommended by Tourism New Zealand - their Themed Highways are well worth planning your trip around - however those blogs are in the pipeline for the New Year.

Finally, before you all drop off to sleep, I would like to thank you all once again , for enriching our lives so much when you stay.You are a fun bunch of people and a joy to share our home with.
It is wonderful to hear from so many of you and to have so many referrals and return guests - we have been 'doing' B&B for nearly 13 years now - so you must be doing something right to keep us here.

Of course, him indoors(aka Len), is a big softy and a smitten Grandad and I love being a Granny - it is so much fun. My parents used to say about my grandparents that the relationship was 'all care- no responsibility' - how right they were and how wonderful it all is - I relish and enjoy every minute I spend with the darling little boy - and if I cause a little mischief - so be it - that's part of the twinkle in my eye.

Our son Andrew is still in Argentiere - still loving the Alps and assures us his French is improving - as it should after 5 years!In between snowboarding and some fairly extreme outdoor activities he fits in enough building to finance it all. We didn't travel to France this year but in 2010 we will - we fancy a short drive from Amsterdam to Venice - via the French Alps and the Italian Lakes.

The Total Route - Part 2

COMPLETING THE SOUTH ISLAND CIRCUIT - PICTION TO CHRISTCHURCH

As explained in the previous blog - I am actually leaping forward in time - to the final part of our journey sampling a bit of Kiwi Splendour.This will leave our North Island Saga as a separate circuit.

We landed back at Picton - after a wonderful trip through the Sounds on the InterIslander Ferry taken in comfort by upgrading to Kaitaki Plus (the ferry is called the Kaitaki and the Plus refers to their equivalent to Business Class) please note this is not available on all vessels so check first.

Just a short distance away is McCormick House ( a fellow member of Heritage & Character Inns).We had a great time is this brilliantly restored historic property - the restoration helped by the fact that Carl is a furniture maker 'extraordinaire'. while the entertainment was helped by the hosts 'extraordinaire' Jeanne & Carl and their generous servings of wine and nibbles. We stayed in the Palm Suite - with a double spa-bath - how many superlatives can be used? Breakfast was amazing and Carl knows all the bees personally that make the wonderful selection of locally produced organic honey.This property is another of the 'must-stay' list and a real credit to Carl & Jeanne.

The following morning we departed for Nelson, taking the Queen Charlotte Drive - this is an amazing road with breathtaking views - just as long as the driver keeps eyes firmly fixed on the road ahead. It is a very twisty road and has to be taken slowly - which is why the distance calculators have you averaging about 50Km per hour- be warned! Large trucks are not allowed on the route but during the season you will meet camper vans driven by foreigners....many of whom aren't overly used to driving on the left.Saying that - there have been very few accidents over the years- you simply can't drive fast on this roadl! There are numerous places where you can park and enjoy the views so don't fret that only one of you gets to sample the beauty.I have heard this road described as like cruising the Marlborough Sounds without a boat!The drive from Havelock to Nelson was far more relaxed for the driver.

Like all areas we have travelled to in NZ, the scenery is everchanging and even writing this blog some months later I find myself visualizing all the highlights - the sheer beauty we are blessed with in Godzone ( we like to think of NZ as God's Own Country - hence the name - nothing humble about a Kiwi!)

Nelson is a beautiful city - sneakily claiming highest overall sunshine hours on an annual basis - but what a claim to fame. Plus of course it make a grand base to explore the whole region which is jammed full of activites of every sort.

Nelson is also the original home to the World of Wearable Art Festival (now so large that it is held in Wellington - capital cities can do that sort of thing!!!)This is Iconic NZ Art - that truly is WOW in every way.If you cannot make the annual show then in Nelson you can go to the Museum which houses the collection - this is a MUST SEE - you will be amazed at the ingenuity of the artists involved.This museum also houses a Classic Car collection so that covers all interests - isn't that right guys?

Nelson is known for its funky fashion and there is an amazing shop just around from the Cathedral called Tula & Niles... very retro ...and worth a visit even if you buy nothing- I told Len I was just going to have a look (yeah right!!!).Of course - he didn't believe me - and he was right ! Men can be right sometimes - about once a year is fine - whoops, just kidding! But on a serious note they have antiques,jewellery and fashion - the displays are art in themselves -it is one of the quirkiest shops I have ever visited.

Nelson and its environs have so much to offer that I could have stayed weeks and written endlessly about it for months - suffice to say - 'gen' up on the area via www.NewZealand.com and book early as this is where the whole of the South Island go for their summer break in January!

Nearly forgot to mention the lovely little historic precinct - South Street- and guess what? It is also in Niles Street - not far from Tula & Niles - just the other side of the Cathedral!

Unfortunately we had to stay in a motel in Nelson ( De Lorenzo's) - this was a very good motel and centrally located - but we personally prefer the atmosphere of a B&B.Once again the selection of Heritage Inns Members in Nelson and the surrounds is exceptional - remember all members are Qualmarked 4 stars and above - and membership is by invitation only.

From Nelson we travelled south via Richmond - another lovely drive and headed over the Lewis Pass - take the superlatives as said - and we were treated to the first snowfall of Winter- not enough to be dangerous just enough to create a fairyland atmosphere.At the top of the Lewis you can partake of a dip in the Maruia Springs Hot Pools or you can detour on the way out of the Lewis and head for Hanmer.This is a quaint Alpine Resort (note NOT a ski resort - although ski fields are nearby) - but the surrounding forest is a walkers paradise - and the aching bones can be eased at the Thermal Pools - great restaurants too and at 90 minutes from Christchurch we love to pop up for a break.We have stayed at Ripponvale Retreat - minutes from town and set in magnificent gardens.The hosts- John & Helen (an accomplished artist) will make you feel right at home in their delightful surroundings.Another favourite is Cheltenham House - a heritage house in Central Hanmer - with a wine o'clock that could challenge Wine O'clock at The Weston House - Len and Maree will treat you like one of the family in surroundings which have been faithfully restored and equipped with every comfort and convenience.Two days in Hanmer is like a week of R&R anywhere else.

Sadly this was the last leg of our journey, as we drove the final 90 mins back to Christchurch with sunlight and snow making for Picasa Moments.

Oh well - back to cooking and cleaning - I think it is called reality!

THE NZ JOURNEY PART 2 - THE TOP OF THE SOUTH

This blog is going to be a little of the start of part two and the final days back home when we returned from the North Island.

The reason is it can be taken as a complete separate journey for someone who wants to tour the South Island only ( whoops don't tell any North Islander this or I won't be allowed back)

NORTH FROM CHRISTCHURCH TO BLENHEIM - STATE HIGHWAY ONE

We returned to Christchurch from the previous trip as we had to be home to receive guests...and it allowed us a little time to catch up on the necessities and drudgeries of life.All completed we left in the afternoon to head towards the top of the South.It rained and then it rained some more...but the scenery was beautiful and every time a truck went past us the car was washed so all was not bad!

The journey to Kaikoura is only 2.5 hours and takes you through verdant farm land, the Wineries of the Waipara Valley (resplendent in their autumn colours) and onto the magnificent coastal road that stretches up from Kaikoura almost into Blenheim and the Wineries of Marlborough .

The Waipara region is famous for Food ,Wine & Festivals - namely Reisling (superb dry & fruity- not the sticky sweet wines normally associated with those grapes.I don't knock dessert wines though - served chilled on a summer's day- it's as close to heaven as the All Blacks winning the World Rugby Cup!)

Kaikoura is famous for seafood (especially Crayfish - just like Lobster - but dare I say nicer?) Dolphin Swimming and Whale Watching.

The Kaikoura journey can be undertaken as a fabulous day trip from Christchurch and by taking the inland route for one leg and taking in Hanmer Springs ( Alpine Spa Town) you can complete the Alpine Pacific Triangle

which is one of the great themed routes that can be found on

the official New Zealand Tourism site www.newzealand.com.

This site is well worth exploring especially for the driving routes under the Themed Highways

- you can explore the best we have to offer - choose your destinations and accommodation and be on your way.

Don't forget that the following two sites offer some of the best B&B accommodation in NZ - and both select members by invitation only : Heritage & Character Inns of New Zealand plus 5 Star Accommodation .The latter now has a pre-paid voucher system which can alleviate the stress while Heritage Inns has a simple online booking system with one CC entry.

Did I mention the rain....well it continued up most of the coast road but the pounding seas made the journey very impressive and just as we drove into Blenheim (4.5hours from Christchurch) we were greeted by wintry sunshine and the magnificent autumn colours of the vineyards of the Awatere Valley( part of the great Marlbourgh wine region - it was such a site I was wondering where I would find the pearly gates!

In the map below I have shown the inland part of this route via Culverden to Kaikoura (shown as a return journey - Google sometimes works harder not smarter!)

Blenheim is a destination in itself and a must for all wine buffs - it is easily reached from Christchurch or the West Coast of the South Island as well it is close to Picton and the ferry terminals for the Inter Island Ferries from Wellington in the North Island.It is possible to visit the wineries and a lot of fun if you cycle with a guide!

We spent a wonderful night at The Peppertree in Blenheim - a fabulous 5 star Qualmark graded property owned and operated by Werner & Heidi Pluss.This is a

beautiful historic house with it's own vineyard.The hosting is magnificent and the food divine - if I could award 6 stars to Heidi & Werner then I would!

The following morning dawned bright and frosty and after a bit of exploration of the area we headed north the final few Kms to Picton - the port town - where the Ferries arrive and depart for the North Island.

To be continued...as it is nearly Wine o'clock ...and I feel the need to open a bottle of Redwood Pass Sav Blanc ...from the Awatere Valley.

Oh how time flies......I am behind again.

Can't believe the last post was August and now it is December...and I have three Blogs to write- two to finish off the trip around New Zealand and one especially for Christmas.

So just a little pre- amble to both.

Although the powers that be, would have us believe the financial crisis is over - certain flow- on effects from 2008 are affecting our Tourist Season.Money lost to the banking gurus and the financial 'wizzes that weren't' , has yet to reappear in the coffers of the touring masses and many like us stayed closer to home.

But all is not lost - we have been doing 'stuff' - and from the look of progress this week - we shouldn't have started! The re-coating of the Kitchen floor failed and has to be sanded back to bare wood...the sealing of the new grout on the hall tiles worked well but spread itself a little too far- and cleaning it off the tiles proved to be a marathon effort.The dishwasher has gone to dishwasher heaven, the bathroom heater died and the time spent in the breakfast room by the bird that fell down the chimney has meant ...well... it did panic.... and guess what a starling does when it panics???Well it did ...and now we have to do some painting.

So a healthy donation to a charity will suffice for Xmas cards this year ... and we may just come to your place as I am terrified to cook the 'dinner' or venture towards baking a cake....

Be warned - I am a menace - must be punishment for being a slack blogger!

OH ...AND THEN THERE WAS THE WEST COAST

THE WEST COAST IN ALL IT'S GLORY - TRUST ME- THIS IS A 'MUST SEE'

Well flippant is not what I want to appear...once again superlatives are right up there!
How do you describe a land of rain forest - not tropical - no snakes - verdant - green even(just kidding- I know what verdant means!!!)
Rain is a given - they measure it by the metre per year- it is legendary.Did I mention the sandflies???Well they are pesky little blood sucking insects that creep up on you and your exposed bodily parts - bite without any pain - and leave an unbearable itch that is too late to revenge.Insect repellent is a must ... don't argue or question - these are the Armageddon of the insect world.They are Al Gore's answer to global warming...they are hell!!!Be warned - I don't think anyone has died of them but if you could itch to death then it's a possibilty.As with most things (sales and husband) I over react and swell and scratch but it would not stop me from a visit to bushland that is the unspoiled part of NZ.As Len says - get over it...and I do!
But one thing is for sure if you come to the South Island of NZ then you will go to the West Coast..as we did- through the Gates of the Haast up to Franz Josef Glacier and here we stayed at Holly Homestead.There Bernie and Gerard will look after you as if you were royalty.Wonderful rooms and facilities - gorgeous NZ crafted furniture by Dag Guest(Christchurch) - no website - just A1 reputation for quality.
The one thing that struck me about the West Coast is that with all the rain everything grows.They cut back the bush - it regenerates- quickly,almost overnight, it seems.
When you drive the main highway it is like driving along a road that has been landscaped.Low ferns, tree ferns and a mown edge - all very park like ,but they tell me ,it is as Mother Nature has done it- I'm not sure on this but local knowledge rules - so it must be right???However,spectacular it is - even when raining.
So on we drove, up through Hokitika,greenstone or NZ jade country, a quick visit to Shanty Town just short of Greymouth- back through Kumara and home to Christchurch via Arthur's Pass. QUEENSTOWN TO WANAKA - CROWNING GLORY TIME

ARROWTOWN IN AUTUMN

Oh well,that will teach me for talking too much...didn't like the font so I changed it , hit enter and lost the lot....the words I then used are unprintable!
Well back to the beginning- maybe it will be shorter - as I do ramble a bit...
We left Queenstown on one of those wonderful autumn mornings - crisp beginning leading to a beautiful day - not a breath of wind.A day made in paradise - a day for meandering, exploring, taking it all in. Plenty of walking, frequent coffees, lots of photos then only a couple of hours driving as we were heading to Wanaka - over the Crown Range - via the fabulous town of Arrowtown .Lunch was on the other side at the famous old Cadrona Hotel - won't bother with a link here to Cadrona itself - if snowboarding and sking are your thing a quick entry on Google will bring all the info.I don't think I would stay at the hotel but the lunch was fine ...plus a draft Speights...him indoors drank wine- really- not a Southern Man at all!!!
Getting a bit ahead of myself here - back to Arrowtown - a true gem - surprisingly unruined by tourism but we were there in the shoulder season - so the tour buses were hardly around.
Everything about the town is great - it has a lot going for it.Great food at Saffron ( a renowned restaurant) quirky boutique Cinema Dorothy Brown's.
The stand out highlight for us though was the visit to the Chinese Goldminers' Settlement - the Chinese also came for the gold but have been, up until recently, largely ignored by our historians but the contribution they made to our country has at last been recognized.I found it as a New Zealander, very moving. CHINESE MINERS' SETTLEMENT,ARROWTOWN

Having explored the little streets we decided that the lofty heights of the Crown Range beckoned .What a road (the highest sealed road in NZ)- well it is now - but when you read about the trek of those first settlers you have to admire their pluck and courage.We come from very hardy stock!The View was - well, I think you should see it for yourselves - make you own mind up - because I will just go on in a gushy, over the top(!!) way - as I do...But forget the European Alps - this is heaven- damn I said I wouldn't go on...but I did....

THE CROWN RANGE TO CADRONA

Well Cadrona is just over the mountains ( she says casually) and after lunch it was on to Wanaka.
After the beauty of the summit it was hard to be impressed with the last part of the drive but we were.There was more wonderful autumn colour - they have planted a lot of Poplar trees over the years - they are fast growing and make excellent windbreaks.Very useful trees - in the country - not so great in town.
I like Wanaka.As a town, it is newer than Queenstown but an elegant little place - very popular as a destination for Kiwis - quite a few holiday homes - nothing cheap - some flashy- but it has what you need plus a great climate.We stayed at Minaret Lodge - great accommodation with everything you might need - Fran and Gary were great hosts, in spite of the fact we were last minute arrivals and they were off to South America within a couple of days.Southern Hospitality - you can't beat it!

SOUTH THROUGH CENTRAL TO 8TH WONDERS OF THE WORLD

Gosh...I though this would be quick and easy to re-tell - but I'm not a diary keeper and I talk more eloquently than I write- but at least I can write in something other than TXT language.There is a reason for this- other than age of course- I'm not good at texting - as I have a need for vowels and still appreciate punctuation even if I'm negligent in its use.

Enough,enough...on with the journey...

From Alexandra we took Route 8 to Rae's Junction....just another road...definitely not.This is moonscape country,stacks of schist stone - flakey layers that defy description- but photograph well.This is the heart of the stonefruit growing area of Central Otago, much of which has been ruined in the name of progress and hydro power stations.Not that they aren't beautiful in themselves - all lakes and dams - I have fewer problems with their impact on the landscape than I do with wind farms - I can't get my head around those at all.Although as an alternative to nuclear power they are no-brainers!

At Rae's junction, we divert onto Route 90 to Gore (about 20K from Clinton -not named after Al or Bill).This detour was to take in a spot of "Dead Relly Hunting"..."relly" being an colloquial abbreviation of relation (as in ancestor).I had to return to my roots in Heriot (home of my Irish/Scottish/German family) and Tapanui (settling place of the McLeod branch).

Beautiful farming country but largely deserted towns - social and technology changes etc- have caused the demise of so many little towns - I wonder if they will ever return... A few interesting graveyard discoveries then off to Gore.

Here we take Route 94 to Te Anau via Lumsden.We are getting so used to this verdant countryside with designer farmstock - including the high fences of Deer Farms (click this link to discover an interesting insight to a NZ developed farming enterprise). I say designer farm stock, as the sheep look groomed and placed just for the tourist buses and the Japanese photographers. Dairy farms look pristine and make a nonsense of the idea of anything other than 'proper' farming techniques are employed in NZ.

As long as we ignore the mobile methane plants that cattle are - all is truely 'green' in this part of the world.

Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park - in my mind the 8th wonder of the world.Yes, there are probably more spectacular places in the world - but here there is so much crammed into a relatively small area and this an area with World Heritage listing.

We have travelled to many places in the World but this had WOW status- untouched, unpolluted, unpopulated (except in peak tourist season- try to travel here-at least once-in the shoulder seasons). Don't worry about the weather- sunshine is a bonus- it rains by the metre per year here- rain turns the whole area into the most stunning sights you will ever see - anywhere.

We spent two nights in Te Anau at Blue Ridge Boutique Bed & Breakfast
Owned and operated by Julia & Philip Robertson - wonderful hosts, local knowledge in spades, whose purpose built accommodation is close to the centre of Te Anau and part of Heritage & Character Inns of NZ.
This is very comfortable accommodation and an ideal starting point for both Doubtful and Milford Sounds.Stay 2-3 nights in this area and visit both sounds - they are very different.Doubtful sound is a day trip in itself involving a boat trip across Lake Manapouri,a bus trip over the Wilmott Pass and by boat out on to Doubtful Sound itself.If possible try to overnight on this sound as it is a recommended experience. But if you are stretched for time, the day trip will suffice and while you are in the region Milford Sound is a must.The Fiordland National park link above covers all the info.
The views at Doubtful were incredible as the waterfalls were in full swing- a couple of days of rain had guaranteed that, but with 500mm (yes - half a metre) of rain overnight in Milford Sound ( quite a bit of rain by local standards!) we couldn't believe our eyes.You could hardly see the granite of the mountains for the waterfalls.As we approached the Homer Tunnel it was raining too hard to get out of the car...so a quick opening of the window managed a couple of 'snaps' and we hoped the river that ran alongside the road would not wash it out for our return journey.Through the tunnel and through the mist it was all before us . As we drove down into the little township, glimpses of Mitre Peak popped out to see us.Gradually it cleared, although not perfectly, but the affect was magical and once again almost tourist free- so the wonders seemed to be just for us.The rain had been so heavy that even the boats weren't going out- so the buses stayed home too....all in all, an ideal situation..Don't be put off by rain, instead rub your hands with glee and venture forward- after all the rain keeps the sandflies at bay- but do remember insect repellent in this part of the world- these are serious biting beasties!
As if we hadn't seen enough of splendour- we finished the day by driving to Queenstown via Kingston (route 6 from Mossburn) and the journey alongside Lake Wakatipu at sunset was amazing.......off to the West Coast via Wanaka and the Crown Range in the next Blog....our collective attention spans have zeroed out & it's nearly wine o'clock - early tonight as we are off to see Starlight Express!

DUNEDIN TO ST BATHANS VIA MIDDLEMARCH AND THROUGH TO ALEXANDRA
We left Dunedin on a gorgeous mild Autumn morning heading south to Mosgiel and then taking route 87 to Middlemarch.
It was stunning (you'll read a lot of the 'big' superlatives in the following Blogs as we rediscovered NZ - the country with the WOW factor!) The countryside had that green park quality- as if we were driving along the approach to a stately home in England - landscape by Capability Brown.The sheep and the trees had been strategically arranged and the road just meandered onward to another photo opportunity.It was 'our' road - well nearly, we only saw one other vehicle - a farm tractor looking for something to mow.

At Middlemarch we stopped for lunch at The Kissing Gate Cafe- homemade bread and soup you could stand your spoon up in.The other diners were all 'age-no object' bicycle tourists starting off on the famous Otago Rail Trail - 150km of manageable stages . By the time we arrived at our end destination that night in Alexandra, we had seen hundreds of bikes attached to cars etc.They were all heading to or from various points along the trail.

Yes, I am considering a spot of lycra myself- it all looked like one of the '100 things I must do before I die'.All safe stuff, as you follow the trail where there used to be railway lines- so no cars,buses,trucks or tractors - just happy cyclists.
North of Kokonga, the road turns left to route 85 and Gold Country.Armed with a map and our now trusty satnav we head off to the towns at the heart of NZ pioneer spirit and gold fever.Ranfurly,Naseby, Kyeburn,Ophir and my favourite, St Bathans.Hot enough in the summer to fry eggs on the roof of the car and cold enough in the winter to play curling on the frozen lakes.This is bleak but beautiful country - captured magnificently in the paintings of Grahame Sydney. This is the Maniototo - Big Sky Country - stunningly beautiful and in such contrast to the lush farmland around the Dunedin inland area - yet half a days drive away.
Have I got your attention yet? Well let me tell you about the beauty of St Bathans- not a modern amenity in sight- all ghosts and gold diggings - little lakes and wind sculptures - pioneer cottages and overgrown gardens. Where true Kiwi Blokes drink Speights and not Heineken. Where the wives chase the chickens off the one main street and the kids wander at will with their dogs, and time stands still...But that is in the Autumn when the other Tourists have gone home and the local remain to winter over.Cold it must be and you shiver at the thought of the sufferings of those early pioneers who risked their all for a better life on the other side of the world.

My great-great grandparents settled in Lawrence at Gabriel's Gully in 1861 and raised 6 children in conditions resembling a third world shanty town..the race for gold was on and so it is continued today with modern technology at Macrae's Flat where they mine 3,000 kgs of gold per annum.... and that buys a lot of shoes and racing fuel!!!...but that is another website and information trivia.

Such was that part of the journey as we drifted - tired but happy into Alexandra- to stay in a Motel (I must mention the Fish & Chips from Oscars- wrapped in newspaper,little pots of malt vinegar, rock salt & cheap as - utterly scrumptious)

We would have preferred to stay at Rocky Range, a fabulous 5 star B&B but they were away....(I know it is fabulous as we have stayed there before and the location is pure superlative - see the website - the photos are only the beginning)

Nothing about this trip has been boring or ordinary....I must close for now...I'm beginning to gush in a Maxine-like manner!

OUR GREAT NEW ZEALAND ADVENTURE...Christchurch to Dunedin

The Introduction

Over the years we have - like all of you- taken small side trips to various localities around our home country.Our 'big' holidays have been spent offshore - after all that is where the adventure is- right?Well,yes and no.

So many of you come back to NZ again and again ( and the WH - for which our Bank Manager,Wine Merchant and ourselves are extremely grateful)...Why? Ok NZ is beautiful but we are a bit blase about this and so this year we went out on a tour of rediscovery.

There were of course several advantages for us - petrol prices are predictable,the currency doesn't fluctuate,we know the local wines and we understand the menus.Len likes the fact I don't need to shop......but need and want are carefully defined in my vocab so I sneak a bit of the retail therapy in anyway!

With certain dates in mind and knowing that April and May are pretty magic months in NZ - Autumn colour etc - we took to the road - armed with the trusty 1953(just kidding)AA Book of Road Maps and Tom Tom telling us in the sweet tone of Joanna Lumley - just where to go!!!

Why Stanav,I hear you ask? Well rumour has it it is quite good and last year in Italy- family guidance in the direction field proved quite stressful - for satnav read 'nagivator'.I drove while others told me where to go...if you catch my drift.Now Len doesn't like being told where to go....and ladies you know exactly what I mean don't you...but if Joanna tells him 'darling,you have arrived at your destination' - he is calmly accepting if not downright smitten!!!!!

I must admit to the odd bit of skepticism especially when the occasional instruction had us turning sharp left in 80 metres - over a vertical cliff - but we stuck to the visible road and discovered Paradise.

The Journey

Day 1 :South we headed via Route 72 - the Inland Scenic Route - to Geraldine then Timaru.Onward to Dunedin on Route 1 via Moeraki (for twilight dinner at Fleur's Place- a MUST DO).Late arrival in Dunedin and two wonderful nights at Fletcher Lodge.

Day 2: Discovered a few Antique shops but main purpose was to drive out to Portobello and the Peninsula and visit the gardens at Larnach Castle. Have to say the gardens were the star attraction plus the views - the castle itself is a little tired in parts but horrendously expensive to run but if you are there it's worth a visit.The drives around the bays and over the Peninsula are stunning. Next stop was a personally guided tour of Olveston - a local historic residence - quite wonderful and appeals to my anti-minimalistic tendencies! This was our second visit but this time we opted for the guided art tour... interesting pictures but they have become so conservation minded they have placed tinted perspex light shields in front of the windows - dimmed the lights - so we had to look at the pictures with the aid of a pocket torch- what a hoot!!!Trust me the ordinary tour is fine but must be pre-booked as it is escorted.

This took us all day....so one day in Dunedin is not enough.

A wildlife trip to see the Albatrosses and Penguins is a must plus a guided City Walk or a visit to the Chinese Gardens...the choices are interesting and varied. www.dunedinnz.com

A SLOW DAY AT THE WESTON HOUSE

SEASON'S GREETINGS 2008

Season's Greetings one and all
.... well only part of the above looks like me- it's the hand holding the wine glass....sentiment is sound though - just like "Wine O'Clock" at The Weston House...and I can hear you all sigh and say 'I remember it well' - except perhaps for Colin.We have fond memories of Colin and the Merlot- Colin you are famous amongst our guests but you surname will only be released to the media in exchange for squillions of dollars(just kidding...)Colin is one of our favourite guests a true gentleman who unfortunately viewed Christchurch through red(merlot) tinted lenses each evening when he went out to dinner- aided by Len with his wine pouring technique 'say when' and the fact that no one ever does so the glass is always filled to impolite levels of 'gosh- not that much'

This is our 11th season doing B&B and the mailing list of the "A" team guests keeps getting longer and longer.. it's your delightful company that keeps us doing this - more of a 'lifestyle choice' than a living!

Like everyone who is retired (oh - retired- is that the word???) with grandchildren, we have had a busy busy year....but oh so wonderful.Our daughter Rebecca and Pascal have presented us with this amazing grandchild- ok , grandparents always think their grandchild is the most attractive,advanced,intelligent little human being to ever set foot on the planet- but we are all right - aren't we?Calix is the best thing that has ever happened to us - I would never have believed that I could spend so much time playing,doing daft things and making certifiable noises-just to make a little child smile.I know you can all imagine me doing this - but I do it sober which is a true worry.But he loves his Granny and Grandad and that smile when he sees us makes the Madoff scam melt into insignificance.It is all true - like so many of you- we are besotted.

It has been a one of those years where yesterday was the 1st of January and we have managed to fit in some work too...we now have a lovely new website- quite a change from the old one and many of you are featured in the moving pictures that go across the top of the screen ...remember all those photos I have been taking - well they are now loaded in a Picasa Album ...see if you can find yourself... http://picasaweb.google.com/weston.house.

In the low-tech area...in our new website (same old web address) we now have a Newsletter Page - in the form of a Blog - so that you can add your comments which should be fun.I am supposed to update it regularly but playtime keeps interrupting me!My New Year's resolution is to be more regular.....

We managed a small break to Europe & the UK..it was the 50th Anniversary of Len's favourite Motor Racing Formula - 'Formula Junior' - so he competed in NZ but was a spectator in the races in Pau,Monza & Brands Hatch.We tried to come and stay with you all but it appeared you were all out when we arrived!!!(just joking)..... we spent most of the time in Europe and even went to St Petersburg - so our time in the UK was very limited and some of that had to be business.Wasn't the best of weather but then we have not always been kind to you weatherwise on your visits to NZ - however Europe & the UK have so much history etc to offer that one can always find something wonderful to look at (or drink) when it rains....sometimes I even shop (really???) but Len has paid zillions of Euro to Easyjet to lower their luggage allowance so that I can't buy too much(that is almost believable - I think their is a 'husband fund' at the airports so that you can all contribute to this- am I right Ladies????)

...so that is it in a nutshell..... New Zealand is still fabulous(2009 we stay home & tour NZ and we made our mind up to do this before the current financial crisis- maybe that was the cause) and remember our currency is very much in your favour.So grab yourself a bargain on the net and direct book with us and we will give you 'mates rates' and a bottle of NZ wine for every night you stay(not to drink here but to take away)Reading this anyone could be forgiven for believing that we just do 'wine o'clock' and no food!

Our best wishes go out to you all for a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous ( or financially viable- at least) New Year but most of all we wish you Health and Peace because money can't buy either of those gifts.

Welcome to our new website...and our very own Blog page.
Here you can keep up to date with Christchurch happenings & Weston House Gossip.We hope to keep everything lighthearted and informative and we want your feedback...

The new look Weston House website goes live today - having been 'work in progress' for quite a few months.I have to thank the patience of our key contributors -Brian from Webdirectionz for the wonderful site and our magic Content Management System , Web design by Dreamland , Website translations from Pascal and Rebecca at TraNZlate Aotearoa - who understood just how important it is to have your product translated correctly by people not machines.(A good plug here - Rebecca is our daughter too, and so I get what we call in New Zealand 'mates' rates' - you will have to negotiate!)
